Photography Resources 3: Software

Software

I have been using Adobe photoshop CS2 for years, ever since I purchase CS2. That’s quite a while ago, somewhere back in 2005! In 2011, I purchased Adobe Lightroom. Wow. It took a while to learn Lightroom, and I’m far from an expert. But it has significantly reduced my processing time. I used to spend 45-60 minutes processing a real estate home shoot. Now I’ve got that down to under 30 minutes!! Plus I have much higher quality output!! Lightroom makes it so easy to process photos quickly. I love it and look forward to learning it much better so I can process even faster.

The difference between Photoshop and Lightroom is mainly that Photoshop is an image manipulation program, where Lightroom is a workflow program. In Photoshop, you load up 1 image and manipulate this and that to get what you want, then save it. In Lightroom, you can change several images at once. You can copy and paste “processing recipes” on various images. I find that I rarely use Photoshop anymore, just mainly replacement skys.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 10*
Adobe Photoshop CS5*

UPDATE: Lightroom 4 has just been released! I have it on order, and it should improve my processing time even more. I can’t wait to get it.

UPDATE: I have now been using LR4 for about 5 months now. It is much better than LR3.5. The main improvement for me is the Highlights and Shodows sliders. These two sliders have significant improvements and are basically the gods of re-lighting.  Amazing stuff, especially since Adobe lowered the price of LR4 to just $150.
